The Sorrowful Mirror

By Fiza Pathan

You left me because my beauty had deserted me.

But nothing lasts forever and a lie remains till it’s frozen in the mirror.

What is a mirror may I ask, a looking-glass to tell me of my misfortune?

For at last the reflection has emerged from my form-my lover left me because of my image.

He chose my best friend instead for her beauty and grace.

O piteous reflection in the mirror, you stand no chance in the battle of pretty faces.

The curtain cannot hide the fact; the present brings everything to light.

I know now that it’s the mirror my looking-glass of shattered dreams that tells me the truth

Yet it is also true that looking glasses do break into pieces, and the fragments cut the foot and pour blood upon the remnants.

Darling lover of mine remember what you have done to me.

You’ve destroyed my self-esteem and have broken my mirror into two.

You yourself will have to bury the dead pieces in the grave of our love.

Let the fragments rest in peace with the story of beauty divine.

May I never see my vision in the light of your eyes again.
